Armed men killed at least 12 people and abducted women and children during a night attack on the village of Lajinge in Nigeria's northwestern Sokoto state. The attack began around 11 p.m. on Saturday and continued until approximately 3 a.m. on Sunday. According to one resident, six members of a single family died after the attackers set fire to their home.
Resident Auwal Hassan reported that the gunmen killed at least 12 people, injured four others, and stole livestock in addition to the abductions. The region frequently experiences raids by heavily armed gangs, referred to as bandits, who typically steal livestock and kidnap residents for ransom.
Sokoto force spokesperson Ahmed Rufai stated that police are investigating the incident and will provide updates. This event follows a similar attack a week prior in neighboring Zamfara state, where bandits killed at least 24 farmers.
