Heat Wave Hits São Paulo State with High Temperatures and Low Humidity

A heat wave is affecting the state of São Paulo starting Friday, August 28, driven by a mass of hot air. In the city of São Paulo, temperatures are expected to reach 34°C, which is nearly 10°C above the average maximum for August. The interior of the state, specifically the north and northwest regions, may see temperatures as high as 38°C in cities such as Araçatuba and Presidente Prudente. Along the coast in the Baixada Santista region, Peruíbe is forecast to reach 36°C on Saturday, while Santos and Cubatão may reach 34°C and 35°C respectively. Temperatures in the coastal region are expected to drop on Sunday to between 22°C and 23°C.

The Civil Defense has issued red alerts for most of the state and orange alerts for the Greater São Paulo area, the east, and the coast. Officials warn that the combination of intense heat and low humidity, which could drop below 12% in some interior areas, increases the risk of wildfires and poses health risks to children, the elderly, and people with respiratory problems. The public is advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and refrain from using fire for land cleaning. Meanwhile, the Inmet has issued a separate orange alert for the South of Brazil due to expected heavy storms and wind gusts of up to 90 km/h.
