Heavy Monsoon Rains Trigger Fatalities and Widespread Flooding Across South India

Monsoon rains have caused at least 136 deaths across several Indian states over the past week, with the highest toll reported in Assam. In Kerala, 26 people have died and seven remain missing, while 12 deaths were reported in Jharkhand due to lightning strikes. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that rain and thundershowers will continue across South India through August 13, with heavy rainfall expected in Kerala and coastal Karnataka. In Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, light to moderate rain is predicted for several areas.

In Kerala, the flooding has led to the displacement of over 11,000 people who are currently housed in relief camps. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan announced emergency preparations in Pathanamthitta and provided financial assistance for deceased families and those whose homes were destroyed. The Chief Minister also noted that some areas received more than 350 mm of rain and claimed that delays in IMD forecasts created initial difficulties. Meanwhile, severe sea erosion in Kasaragod has washed away a coastal road, cutting off approximately 200 families and damaging the compound wall of the ICAR Central Plantation Crops Research Institute.

Infrastructure and safety measures have been impacted across multiple districts. In Idukki, travel on the Neriamangalam Adimali stretch of the Kochi Dhanushkodi National Highway was banned due to mudslide threats, and all tourism centers remain closed. In Ernakulam, water levels in the Muvattupuzha and Thodupuzha rivers have crossed critical warning marks. To regulate rising reservoirs, authorities have opened shutters at the Kanjirapuzha dam in Palakkad and several smaller dams in Idukki. In Karnataka, heavy rain is forecast for Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada, with gusty winds expected in North Interior Karnataka.
