Heavy Rainfall Causes Widespread Flooding and Infrastructure Failure in Delhi and Gurugram

Heavy rainfall lashed Delhi and Gurugram on Friday and Saturday, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue red and orange alerts. The downpours caused widespread waterlogging, disrupted flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport, and created severe traffic congestion across the National Capital Region. In Gurugram, arterial roads and residential sectors were submerged, leading authorities to advise the public to avoid non essential travel. One fatality was reported on Thursday in Bajghera after a laborer came into contact with a broken high tension powerline during the rain.

Infrastructure failures became a point of political contention. Congress MP Brijendra Singh posted a video of himself stranded for nearly an hour in a waterlogged tunnel on the Dwarka Expressway. Singh criticized the Modi government, noting the tunnel cost 250 crore rupees per kilometer and contrasting the current state of the road with Prime Minister Modi's previous claims that the project would transform lives. In response to the flooding in Gurugram, MP Rao Inderjit Singh apologized and vowed to fix accountability.

Government responses varied by region. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta conducted surprise inspections of waterlogged areas in East Delhi to review drainage systems. In Gurugram, civic agencies including the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority deployed suction pumps to clear excess water from low lying junctions.
