Heavy Rainfall Paralyzes Delhi-NCR with Severe Waterlogging and Transport Disruptions

Heavy rainfall across the Delhi-NCR region on Monday, August 24, 2026, caused widespread waterlogging, massive traffic congestion, and significant transport disruptions. In Delhi, the India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for all 11 districts as rain totals exceeded normal levels at several stations. In response, the Gurugram administration advised corporate offices to allow work from home and directed schools to conduct classes online for Tuesday. Other areas of the National Capital Region, including Noida and Ghaziabad, also reported waterlogging and traffic snarls, while parts of Himachal Pradesh saw 98 roads closed to vehicular traffic.

Reports on the cause of the chaos vary by political lean. Outlets with a center-right lean emphasized the intensity of the rainfall and the efforts of civic agencies to manage the situation, noting that some drains functioned according to design parameters despite the volume of water. Conversely, center-left and center framing highlighted the failure of civic infrastructure, citing viral videos of students wading through waist-deep water and quoting traders who claimed that authorities failed to take timely action despite repeated warnings. One center-right report noted that a PWD official claimed waterlogging points had been reduced from 194 to 65, while another report from the same lean noted that the PWD minister had previously claimed 95 percent of drains were desilted.
