Heavy Rainfall Triggers Road Cave-ins and Severe Waterlogging in Gurugram

Heavy rainfall in Gurugram on Monday led to three road cave-ins and widespread waterlogging across the city. A portion of the service road at IFFCO Chowk collapsed, which preliminary findings suggest was caused by a breach in a main sewer line belonging to the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). In a separate incident in Sector 9, a cement-laden canter sank into a section of the link road to Dwarka Expressway where excavation work was underway. A third vehicle, a truck carrying sand, became stuck near Narsinghpur village after a stormwater drain slab broke under its weight. No injuries were reported in these incidents.

Rainfall measurements varied by location. The Gurugram tehsil recorded 75 mm of rain between 8 am and 3 pm, while the India Meteorological Department station at Gurugram North Cap University logged 38 mm between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm. Waterlogging severely impacted traffic at several key locations, including Rajiv Chowk, Narsinghpur, IFFCO Chowk, Sirhaul border, NH-48, Sohna Road, Sheetla Mata Road, and parts of Old Gurugram. Additionally, reports indicated that Golf Course Road struggled with the flooding.

GMDA spokesperson Neha Sharma stated that the affected area at IFFCO Chowk has been barricaded. She noted that directions have been issued to repair the 1000 mm master sewer line, and road repairs will follow. This follows a December warning from the GMDA to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) regarding a possible cave-in at the IFFCO flyover due to an old water pipeline.
