Heavy Rains Cause Fatalities, Flooding, and Agricultural Loss Across Kerala

Heavy rainfall has caused widespread disruption across Kerala, resulting in at least two deaths and significant property and crop damage. In Kannur, the bodies of two men were recovered on Tuesday after a three day search. V.H. Hanifa was swept away by the Kanhirapuzha river, while R. Rajesh, a swimming instructor, died while attempting to rescue a farmer from flash floods in the Kariyangode river.

Flooding persists in low lying and riverside areas of Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Kozhikode. The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for 12 districts on August 4, with Kasaragod recording the state's highest rainfall at 121.5 mm. Several rivers, including the Muvattupuzha and Thodupuzha, remained above warning levels on Tuesday morning, although officials reported that water levels were receding. Additionally, several power generation dams in Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Thrissur, and Kozhikode are currently in a red alert state.

In the Kollam district, heavy rains caused an estimated 17.05 lakh rupees in crop losses, affecting 163 farmers across 5.31 hectares of farmland. The highest monetary loss in the district occurred in Chadayamangalam. Due to rough sea conditions and high speed winds, the District Collector of Kollam has instructed fishermen to stay ashore until August 8.

Government response efforts include the sanctioning of 25,000 rupees for cleaning work in every ward and the announcement of financial assistance for those who lost homes and livelihoods. State Tourism Minister P C Vishnunadh stated that special adalats will be held to help residents restore documents lost in the floods and that the government will provide necessary textbooks to affected children.
