Heavy Rains in Kerala Leave Eight Dead and Thousands Displaced

Heavy rainfall across Kerala has resulted in eight deaths, thirteen injuries, and eight people reported missing. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan announced that 5,792 people have been moved to 209 relief camps. The storms have caused significant property damage, including the complete destruction of 27 houses and partial damage to 196 others. The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for 12 districts and a yellow alert for Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, warning of further heavy rain and strong winds.

Flooding has severely impacted several regions. In central Travancore, the Pampa, Meenachil, and Manimala rivers have risen sharply, leading to evacuations in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Alappuzha. In Kozhikode, the Kakkayam reservoir reached 97.31 percent capacity, prompting authorities to open spillway gates. Meanwhile, high turbidity from landslides in the catchment areas disrupted drinking water treatment at the Pazhassi dam, affecting water supply to parts of Kannur.

Government responses include the closure of educational institutions in 12 districts and the suspension of tourism activities near water bodies. Sabarimala pilgrims are currently barred from entering Pampa for safety. Chief Minister Satheesan scheduled an emergency meeting with District Collectors and ministers to review relief camp arrangements and rescue operations.
