Japan's weather agency issued a Level 5 special heavy rain warning on Sunday for the cities of Fukui, Ono, and Katsuyama in central Japan. This is the highest warning level and indicates that a disaster has likely occurred or is imminent. Approximately 244,000 people were urged to take emergency safety measures, and around 111,000 people across five municipalities were urged to evacuate. Reports indicate that mudslides have occurred and vehicles have been stranded on flooded roads.

In the 24 hours leading up to Sunday morning, Katsuyama, Sakai, and Fukui received record rainfall exceeding 300 millimeters. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism may discharge water from a dam in Sakai to manage rising water levels. Land ministry officials have called on the public to stay away from rivers, irrigation canals, and flooded roads.

The Japan Meteorological Agency later lowered the warning to Level 4, though residents are still advised to evacuate affected areas. Unstable atmospheric conditions are expected to bring further rain to western and eastern Japan. The Hokuriku region may receive up to 120 mm of rain, while the Chugoku region may see 80 mm through Monday morning.
