Europe is facing a series of historic wildfires across multiple countries including France, Spain, Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. The EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre director, María Zuber, warned that all of Europe could be in flames if fires in Spain, Portugal, and France were not extinguished by early August.
In Spain, President Pedro Sánchez has lifted the national emergency after fires near Madrid and Ávila stabilized; however, a new fire in Fermoselle recently forced the evacuation of over 600 people. The fire in Ávila was the largest recorded in Spain since 1961, burning approximately 50,000 hectares. In France, a megafire in Gironda destroyed 42,000 hectares and resulted in three firefighter deaths and 87 injuries. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that arson is suspected in 70 percent of the cases.
Greece and Turkey are also battling severe blazes. In Greece, three firefighters died while fighting fires in Crete and the Peloponnese; approximately 8,000 people were displaced from a tourist zone on the island of Crete. Turkey is combating more than 100 forest fires, particularly in the provinces of Antalya and Mugla.
In the United Kingdom, a major incident was declared for a blaze at Dunwich Heath in Suffolk, which put the Sizewell B nuclear power plant on alert. Drought conditions have been declared across all of Wales and half of England.
