Historical Artifacts Uncovered During Buckingham Palace Renovations

A variety of forgotten objects from the Victorian era and the reigns of George VI and Elizabeth II have been discovered during ongoing restoration work at Buckingham Palace. The items, found beneath floorboards and in hidden spaces, include a 1949 ticket for a Royal Household social club card game, 1957 football pool betting coupons, worn hobnail boots, and an empty cigarette packet. Other finds include a fragment of theatre listings from 1889 and a 1966 newspaper clipping about the Great Train Robbers. A typed schedule from 1977 also revealed specific directions for Queen Elizabeth II to move in a clockwise direction during a diplomatic reception for her Silver Jubilee.

The discoveries occurred during a major reservicing project aimed at renewing wiring, pipes, and heating to protect the historic building. The project has involved the removal of approximately 2km of brittle rubber cabling that posed a fire risk. While the estimated cost of the investment is reported as nearly 500 million euros by one source and 370 million pounds by another, the work has been ongoing since either 2015 or 2017 and is expected to conclude next year.
