Hong Kong director Ann Hui will be honored with the Camellia Award at the 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) for her contributions to empowering and advancing women in the film industry. The award will be presented during the opening ceremony on October 6, with the festival running through October 15 in Busan. The Camellia Award, presented in partnership with Chanel, is given to filmmakers who have significantly elevated the status of women in cinema. Previous recipients include production designer Ryu Seong-hie and Taiwanese filmmaker Sylvia Chang.
Hui, who is 79 years old, began her career with the 1979 debut film "The Secret." She has since directed 27 feature films and two feature-length documentaries. Her notable works include "Boat People," "Summer Snow," and "A Simple Life." Throughout her career, she has won the best director award six times at the Hong Kong Film Awards and three times at Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards. Her international accolades include the 2020 Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice International Film Festival and the 2014 Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award at BIFF.
In a statement, Hui noted that she was previously unwilling to receive taking-stock prizes because she wished to continue making movies. She added that since she is nearly eighty and finds it difficult to make a film, the prize comes at a time when she can appreciate it more.
