- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
At least three to four crew members were killed on Tuesday after a cargo ship was hit by a projectile in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait off the coast of Yemen. The vessel, identified by several sources as the Tihamah, was sailing under the flag of Tanzania and was reportedly Egyptian owned. Yemeni authorities and maritime security sources state that the victims include three Pakistanis and one Indonesian. The attack occurred near the port of Mocha, where the ship was reportedly at anchor or sailing. The UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre confirmed the vessel was hit by a projectile of unknown origin, while the Yemeni government specifically attributed the strike to Iran backed Houthi rebels. The Houthis have not yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
Following the initial strike, a Yemeni government vessel arrived to assist the crew and subsequently came under fire. Reports on the casualties from this second incident vary, with some sources stating one person was killed and others reporting that three coastguard personnel were injured by a drone. The Tihamah was reportedly transporting food and suffered a fire on deck during the attack.
This incident occurs amid a broader escalation of violence in the region. The Houthis recently announced a naval blockade of Saudi ports and have carried out strikes on the port city of Mocha and the province of Marib, killing several civilians and government soldiers. These events follow the collapse of a 2022 truce in Yemen's civil war. Regional tensions have been further heightened by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, which has forced more shipping traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. In a separate incident, reports indicate a U.S. helicopter fired a missile at the rudder of a Panama flagged container ship, the Vela Nova, off the coast of Pakistan for attempting to evade a U.S. blockade of Iranian ports.
