Houthi Attacks on Saudi Oil Facilities Spark Fears of Regional Escalation

Yemen's Iran backed Houthis launched a wave of missile and drone attacks against four cities in southern Saudi Arabia, wounding 73 people and setting oil installations ablaze. The strikes targeted facilities belonging to the state oil company Aramco in Abha and Jizan, as well as a Saudi airbase in Khamis Mushait and targets in Najran. Saudi authorities reported temporary shutdowns at oil sites, while satellite images showed thick smoke over the Jizan refinery and an oil distribution center in Abha. In response, the Saudi led coalition vowed to take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty and neutralize the threat.

The escalation follows the collapse of a four year truce in July and occurs amid a broader conflict involving the US and Iran. Reports indicate that fighting has reignited around the Bab al Mandab Strait, with Saudi backed government forces launching offensives to recapture Houthi held territory. The International Organisation for Migration stated that over 18,500 people have fled their homes due to fighting along Yemen's west coast over the last three days. Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, warned that the escalation risks a regional expansion that could catastrophically disrupt essential services and worsen the humanitarian crisis facing millions.

Economic impacts have been noted as global oil prices rose following the attacks and a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran. Brent crude reached 99.46 dollars per barrel on Tuesday.
