Houthi Attacks Target Saudi Refinery and Yemeni Port of Mocha

Houthi rebels launched a series of drone and missile attacks on Sunday, targeting a Saudi Aramco oil refinery in Jizan and the government controlled port of Mocha in Yemen. The attacks in Mocha resulted in multiple casualties, with reports on the death toll varying between seven and 14 people, including civilians and government forces. Medical sources and government officials reported dozens of injuries following the strikes on the port city. In Saudi Arabia, the energy ministry confirmed that a fire broke out at the Jazan refinery at dawn, which was subsequently extinguished by Aramco security teams. Saudi officials stated there were no injuries at the refinery site.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed the operations were precise strikes against Saudi troops and weapons depots in Mocha and a response to Saudi incursions in northwest Yemen. Conversely, the internationally recognized Yemeni government described the strikes as a systematic war against vital economic arteries and alleged that the rebels targeted densely populated residential areas. Government forces reported shooting down 11 drones and destroying an unmanned explosive boat intended for the Mocha pier.

These events follow the collapse of a 2022 truce in July. The regional tension is linked to a broader conflict involving the United States and Iran, with Houthis implementing a maritime blockade of Saudi ships in the Red Sea. In response to the escalating instability, Saudi Arabia signed a mutual defense pact with Pakistan and Turkey on Friday.
