Houthi Forces Seize Red Sea Coastline as Regional Conflict Escalates

Houthi fighters have seized control of the entire Red Sea coastline of Yemen, including the strategic town of Mokha and Mayun island in the Bab al-Mandeb strait. This development gives the group control over a critical chokepoint for global oil and trade. The takeover occurred between September 10 and September 11, after forces loyal to the internationally recognized government withdrew. A Houthi military spokesman stated the operation cleared Saudi backed forces from six districts covering 5,400 square kilometers.

In response, Saudi Arabia launched air strikes on Mokha airport and shut down its East West oil pipeline as a precautionary measure following drone strikes. Saudi officials claim these drones were launched from Iraqi territory with Houthi assistance. Meanwhile, Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree announced a separate military operation targeting weapon depots and command centers at a Saudi military base in the Sharurah region using ballistic missiles and drones.

The conflict has caused a humanitarian crisis, with Djibouti's minister of economy and finance reporting that 1,400 people fled Yemen for Djibouti in a 24 hour period. Tensions have also flared in the Strait of Hormuz, where the UKMTO reported a vessel was struck by a projectile. Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported the vessel was an Iranian commercial ship, noting one death and three injuries.
