Iran aligned Houthi militants seized control of the strategic port city of Mocha on the Red Sea on Thursday, September 10. Yemeni government sources and military officials confirmed the takeover, noting that the rebels are now advancing toward the Bab al-Mandab Strait. This waterway, known as the Gate of Tears, is one of the world's most critical shipping routes for crude oil and global commodities. Some reports indicate the Houthis have also captured the island of Zuqar and are launching attacks on the Hanish islands. Government forces are reportedly retreating south toward Dhubab to maintain a hold on the strait.

While Houthi spokespeople have claimed that international trade in the Red Sea remains safe, shipping analysts note a sharp decline in vessel transits. Pakistan has reportedly conveyed a Saudi warning to Iran to restrain the Houthis, though Iranian officials responded that they do not control the group.
US President Donald Trump has stated that he expects the war with Iran to end immediately following the US midterm elections. He has also threatened to strike the Pickaxe Mountain facility in Iran if activity continues there.
