Huawei has launched the Mate XT 2, a new trifold smartphone that unfolds twice to provide a tablet sized screen. The device features a redesigned folding mechanism that folds inward toward the center, a departure from the Z shape of previous versions. It is equipped with a 10.2 inch internal OLED screen and a 6.5 inch external OLED screen. The smartphone is powered by the Kirin 9050 Pro chip, which Huawei claims improves overall performance by 42 percent over its predecessor. This chip utilizes a proprietary architecture called LogicFolding based on the Tau Scaling Law, which the company states helps it overcome US restrictions on advanced technology.
Prices for the Mate XT 2 in China start at 19,999 yuan, approximately 2,980 US dollars, with higher end configurations reaching up to 29,999 yuan. A key new feature is an optional privacy screen that narrows the viewing angle to prevent nearby people from seeing the content. The device also includes a 50 MP main camera with variable aperture, a 5,600 mAh battery, and support for 66 W wired charging. It is the first device to run on HarmonyOS 7.
The launch occurs during a period of intense competition in the premium foldable market. Xiaomi launched a rival foldable, the 18 Fold, on the same day, while Apple is expected to unveil new iPhone models and potentially a foldable device on Wednesday. Huawei currently leads the Chinese smartphone market with a 22.6 percent share and dominates the foldable segment in China with 68 percent of shipments. Despite this success, the company remains prohibited from selling in the US due to national security concerns cited by Washington.
