A new analysis by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group has found that human-caused climate change is the primary driver behind record-breaking sea temperatures around Europe in 2026. Some areas of the ocean surface reached temperatures up to 6 degrees Celsius above normal. The study focused on four coastal regions: the Mediterranean, the Bay of Biscay, the Iberian Peninsula, and the seas near Ireland and the United Kingdom. Researchers found that the Mediterranean is warming faster than the global average, with climate change adding approximately 2 degrees Celsius to its temperatures, while Western European seas saw an increase of about 1.4 degrees Celsius.

The study indicates that the extreme heat recorded this year would have been virtually impossible in a pre-industrial climate for three of the four regions studied. In the Celtic Sea, such temperatures would have been expected only once a century without human-induced warming. The expansion of marine heatwaves has been significant: 90 percent of the Bay of Biscay and Iberian coast and 80 percent of the western Mediterranean experienced heatwave conditions. In a world without current human-caused warming, these figures would have been closer to 40 percent. In the eastern Mediterranean, the affected area dropped from 70 percent to 9 percent in simulations without global warming.

Marine ecologists warn that these temperatures are pushing many species toward their biological limits of adaptation. The heat can cause mass die-offs of corals, sponges, and macroalgae, which disrupts the entire food chain and threatens the fishing industries that coastal communities rely on for food and income. Beyond the water, warmer seas increase humidity and overnight temperatures in coastal areas and can fuel more intense storms and extreme rainfall on land.
