A fast moving wildfire known as the Hawk Fire has forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents in the northwest periphery of Reno, Nevada. Authorities have ordered approximately 42,000 residents to evacuate, while another 45,000 to 48,000 people have been told to be ready to leave. In total, nearly 90,000 residents are affected by these orders. The fire began on Saturday and has burned between 13,000 and 15,000 acres, or roughly 53 square kilometers, and remains 0 percent contained.
At least six people have been injured, including three first responders. Several homes have been destroyed, and nearly 10,000 homes and businesses in Washoe County have lost power. Portions of US Route 395 are closed, and most schools in the county remained closed on Monday. Governor Joe Lombardo has declared a state of emergency in Washoe County, mobilizing the National Guard with 60 troops and two helicopters to assist. Approximately 800 firefighters are battling the blaze, including crews from Australia and New Zealand.
Officials have confirmed the fire was human caused, though they have not specified if it was intentional. Fire Chief Richard Edwards described the incident as dynamic and driven by winds that move rapidly into residential areas. Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam noted that changing winds made the fire unpredictable, at one point causing flames to jump over fire trucks. The National Weather Service predicts afternoon showers may assist firefighting efforts.
