A massive flash flood caused by a glacier collapse has killed over 500 people and left nearly 1,000 missing across Nepal and China's Tibet region. The disaster occurred on Wednesday, August 26, when a torrent of rock, ice, and mud surged through mountain river systems, wiping out entire villages and destroying infrastructure near the Nepal China border. Rescue efforts have been hampered by mud, wreckage, and a lack of power and connectivity in the devastated zones. Some rescue operations were briefly halted after a landslide created a lake that began to overflow.
Many of the missing are foreign nationals, including a significant number of religious pilgrims traveling toward the sacred Mount Kailash. Reports indicate that over 700 foreign nationals from 31 countries are unaccounted for. Among them are 90 Americans, including a 67 year old man from Virginia, a mother and daughter from New York, and a couple from New York. Additionally, several Germans are missing, including members of a group organized by the Isha Foundation. A 30 year old Filipino doctor, Juan Carlos Manalo, is also reported missing after last contacting his family on August 25.
While many remain missing, some rescues have been reported. A four person German family was rescued by helicopter and taken to an army camp in Battar Bazar after a change in their trekking plans saved them from staying in Syabrubesi. Families from India and other parts of the world have arrived at Kathmandu airport to search for their relatives. President Donald Trump stated that the United States is willing to provide any help to Nepal following the disaster.
