- A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.
Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.
Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.
The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.
At least 165 people have died and over 1,000 remain missing after a massive flash flood and debris flow struck the border region between Nepal and Tibet on Wednesday. Nepali authorities reported 162 deaths, while Chinese state media reported three deaths in the Tibet region. The disaster destroyed nine hydropower projects, 19 bridges, and 40 kilometers of highway, sweeping away entire villages and market areas. The surge affected the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, with some reports indicating water levels rose by up to nine meters within 30 minutes.
The United States Geological Survey initially reported a magnitude 4.4 earthquake in the region. However, the agency later clarified that the seismic activity was actually caused by a massive glacial collapse and debris flow, which registered as a magnitude 5.2 event. Experts from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development suggest an ice and rock avalanche may have temporarily blocked a river before releasing a sudden, gargantuan volume of water. Some scientists suggest that climate change and rising temperatures in the Himalayas have destabilized glaciers, making such events more likely.
Rescue efforts are complicated by unstable terrain and the destruction of communication infrastructure. Hundreds of foreign nationals are missing, including a significant number of Indian pilgrims traveling to Mount Kailash, as well as citizens from the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, South Korea, and Malaysia. India has provided 10 tonnes of humanitarian assistance, and China has deployed military personnel and emergency kits to the affected area. Survivors described the event as an inland tsunami, with some reporting that the wall of mud and debris reached heights of five to six meters.
