At least 580 people have been confirmed dead and approximately 2,500 are missing across Nepal and China's Tibet following devastating flash floods. Scientists and reports indicate the disaster was triggered on Wednesday when a glacier near the Langtang Lirung mountain peak collapsed, sending an avalanche of ice and rock into the valley and causing massive landslides. The resulting floods leveled entire communities in northern Nepal, specifically affecting the Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts north of Kathmandu.
Rescue efforts have highlighted several survival stories. A woman in her 90s, identified as Guna Maya Bohara (or Gunakeshari Bohara), was rescued from the rubble of a government care home in Rasuwa after a four hour operation involving an excavator. She is currently recovering in a hospital in Kathmandu. In another instance, 8 year old Zoyal Ghale was reunited with his mother after he survived the floods by climbing trees. Ghale was airlifted from Rasuwa with a broken leg and facial cuts. UNICEF reported that at least 17,000 children have been affected across the impacted districts.
International casualties have also been reported. An American couple survived the floods, while a Japanese family of five, including two boys and a girl, is believed to be missing. The landscape in the affected regions has been described as unrecognizable, with schools and markets destroyed by water, stones, and mud.
