Hungary is sinking two barges in the Danube River to raise water levels and ensure the Paks nuclear power plant remains operational. Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced the measure on Saturday. The Paks plant provides more than a third of the country's electricity and requires river water to cool its reactors. Extreme summer heat has caused the Danube to hit record lows, which has impacted power production. According to the prime minister, the water level at the plant has already risen by 1 centimeter since the sinking began Saturday morning.
