Hurricane Lowell left at least one person dead and caused extensive damage across Hawaii, particularly on the island of Kauai. The storm brought fierce winds and heavy rains that knocked out power to thousands of residents. On Kauai, the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative reported that nearly all of its 35,000 members were without power early Tuesday. Governor Josh Green closed schools and government offices on three islands in anticipation of the storm.
Infrastructure damage included ripped up beachside roads and downed trees. On Kauai, sustained winds were measured just above 80 kilometers per hour at Lihue Airport, while some gusts reached 130 kph. Approximately 300 people sought refuge in shelters on Kauai. On Oahu, road crews worked to clear sand and rocks from a major route along the western edge of the island after floodwaters topped a coastal highway.
While the center of the storm passed west of the islands and warnings were eventually lifted, officials warned that flooding and mudslides remained a risk. Separately, the remnants of Hurricane Marie created dangerous surf conditions along the coasts of Mexico and Southern California, leading to the collapse of a beachfront home driveway in Malibu.
