Sanjay Sah, a 30 year old hydropower worker, survived for ten days trapped in a flooded tunnel following devastating floods that hit Nepal and Tibet on August 26. Sah survived the ordeal in darkness by drinking muddy water. He was rescued by a disaster response team on September 4. Upon his rescue, Sah reported being disoriented and believing only a few days had passed. He was later celebrated by family and neighbors in the Saptari district with cake, balloons, and garlands.
The disaster has resulted in a high casualty count, though reports vary slightly. One source reports 1,386 dead and 5,130 missing on the Nepalese side, while another reports at least 1,429 dead and more than 5,640 missing, with the majority of victims in Nepal.
