IAEA Refers Iran to UN Security Council Amid Reports of Nuclear Site Activity

The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has passed a resolution accusing Iran of failing to comply with its nuclear nonproliferation commitments and has referred the matter to the UN Security Council. The resolution expresses grave concern over Iran's continued noncompliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, marking the first time in 20 years that the board has taken such a step. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi also confirmed that remote imagery shows construction activity at Pickaxe Mountain, a heavily fortified site with underground tunnels suspected of housing nuclear related activities. US President Donald Trump has publicly warned Iran against activity at the site and threatened a hard strike.

Iran has condemned the resolution as baseless and politically motivated. Iranian representatives state that the ongoing conflict, which includes a US and Israeli war against Iran, has made it impossible to provide inspectors safe access to nuclear facilities. The US, along with the UK, France, and Germany, sponsored the resolution. While the US asserts that Iran was on the verge of creating a nuclear bomb, reports indicate this claim is not backed by the IAEA or US intelligence agencies.

The diplomatic escalation occurs alongside active military conflict. Recent reports indicate that US forces fired over 30 Patriot missiles to defend a base in Jordan from Iranian attacks, resulting in light damage to several US aircraft. Additionally, there are reports that Iran may be analyzing a captured US Dive LD underwater drone to replicate its systems. Oil prices have surpassed 100 dollars a barrel as tensions escalate in the Strait of Hormuz.
