India Advances Census Dates for Four Poll Bound States

The Registrar General of India (RGI) announced on Saturday that population enumeration for Census 2027 will begin on December 1, 2026, in Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and parts of Uttarakhand. This schedule advances the exercise in these states, which are expected to go to polls early next year, while the rest of the country is likely to begin enumeration in February. Snow bound areas of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and the Union territory of Ladakh follow a different timeline. Field work in these regions began on September 1, with a reference date of October 1, 2026. Meanwhile, the RGI issued a separate notification deferring house listing operations for Census 2027 in Manipur until further declaration.
