Senior military commanders from India and China held talks over two days this week in the Arunachal Pradesh sector. According to the external affairs ministry, the first session took place on the Indian side on Sunday, September 6, at Wacha, and the second session occurred on the Chinese side on Monday, September 7, at Damai. Lt Gen Girish Kalia, head of the Dimapur based 3 Corps, led the Indian delegation.
These meetings serve as a follow up to recent discussions between Special Representatives and a border mechanism. Specifically, the 24th round of talks between India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi on August 19 resulted in ten points of consensus, which included creating mechanisms for military commander talks in the eastern and middle sectors of the Line of Actual Control (LAC). A similar mechanism already exists for the western sector, including Ladakh.
Sources familiar with the matter stated that the talks focused on maintaining peace and tranquillity along the frontier in the eastern sector. This meeting is the first since tensions erupted between the Indian Army and the People's Liberation Army at Taksing in Arunachal Pradesh's Upper Subansiri district during July and August.
