India and United States Negotiate Final Terms of Bilateral Trade Agreement

India and the United States are working to finalize a bilateral trade agreement, with Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stating that the deal will be announced once Washington offers a preferential rate. Goyal noted that India seeks a tariff advantage over competing economies before signing the pact. US Ambassador Sergio Gor described the effort as building a fair, reciprocal, and mutually beneficial trade relationship, emphasizing that fair market access must apply in both directions.

The two nations have been negotiating the agreement since February 2025. While a tentative framework previously suggested US tariffs on Indian goods would be reduced to 18 percent from a combined rate of 50 percent, the process has faced complications. One report notes that the 50 percent rate included a punitive levy related to India's purchase of Russian oil. Another report states that negotiations were postponed after the US Supreme Court struck down global tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on February 20, leading to further tariff adjustments.

Goyal is scheduled to visit the United States in late September for the G20 Trade Ministerial in Milwaukee. During this trip, he is expected to meet with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to discuss the trade deal. Ambassador Gor highlighted that cooperation between the two countries extends beyond goods to include information technology, pharmaceuticals, defence sales, and space cooperation via NASA and ISRO.
