India Dominates Boxing and Athletics at 2026 Commonwealth Games

India achieved significant success at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, particularly in boxing and athletics. The Indian boxing contingent emerged as the top team, securing seven gold and three silver medals. Notable victories included gold medals for Jaismine Lamboriya, who defeated Michaela Walsh, and Preeti Pawar. In the men's category, Sachin Siwach and Ankush also won gold. However, Lovlina Borgohain suffered a 1 to 4 loss to Australia's Emma Sue Greentree. In athletics, Tejaswin Shankar became the first Indian decathlete to win a Commonwealth Games medal, finishing with 7976 points despite competing with a flared up patellar tendinitis. Gulveer Singh also made history as the first Indian athlete to win two track medals, earning a bronze in the 5000m and a silver in the 10000m. India's total athletics tally reached ten medals, consisting of five silver and five bronze.

Other nations also saw historic moments. Tarona Taafaki won Tuvalu's first ever Commonwealth Games medal, a bronze in the women's 75kg boxing class. Taafaki received the medal via a bye to the last four despite losing her bout to India's Lovlina Borgohain. Her coach and father, Badi Taafaki, stated that the medal would be used to highlight the climate change emergency facing Tuvalu. Meanwhile, Team Nigeria secured silver in the men's 4x100m relay after Canada was disqualified for lane infringement. Nigeria also earned a silver in the women's long jump through Ruth Usoro and a bronze in the mixed 4x400m relay, bringing their total tally to 23 medals.
