India Sees Price Hikes for Commercial LPG and Aviation Turbine Fuel

Prices for commercial LPG and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) increased on September 1. The price of 19kg commercial LPG cylinders rose by approximately 10 rupees, bringing the cost in Delhi to between 2,738 and 2,745.5 rupees. While domestic LPG prices remain unchanged, some reports note that 5kg free trade cylinders, often used by migrant populations, increased by 2 rupees. The price of ATF for domestic airlines rose by 6.28 rupees per litre, an increase of over 5 percent, bringing the rate to approximately 121.2 rupees per litre. This follows a price increase in August and a reduction in July.

Reports differ in their framing of these economic changes. A center right source presents the price hikes as part of a broader list of administrative and regulatory updates, including new US visa rules and EV localization requirements. In contrast, a left leaning source frames the hikes as a significant financial burden, noting that ATF accounts for about 40 percent of airline operating expenses and highlighting the impact of the West Asia crisis on global oil prices and imports.

Other changes taking effect include the removal of boarding pass stamps for international travelers departing India to streamline the immigration process. Additionally, the government's PM E-DRIVE scheme will introduce new localization requirements for electric commercial vehicles by September 1, 2026, requiring domestic manufacturing of traction motors to qualify for subsidies. Regarding international travel, US student and visitor visa holders will no longer have an open ended duration of status, with admission periods reduced to a fixed term of up to 4 years effective September 15.
