India voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly resolution to adopt an equal area cartographic representation of the world. The resolution, spearheaded by Togo and supported by the African Union, aims to correct distortions found in the traditional Mercator map, which often makes countries near the poles appear larger than those near the equator. The resolution passed with 164 countries in support, while the United States voted against it and six other states abstained.
While backing the move to rebalance the representation of continental landmasses, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued a firm clarification regarding the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India's sovereign territory must be depicted according to India's official map. He emphasized that any inaccurate or misleading depiction is unacceptable and that India's position on territorial integrity is non negotiable.
The Ministry of External Affairs further clarified that the vote was based on the principle of promoting equal area representation and does not constitute an endorsement of any specific projection or depiction of national boundaries. The equal earth map was created in 2018 and was adopted by all 54 African Union nations in February 2026 to provide a more accurate representation of the African continent.
