Indian-origin lab owner declared US fugitive in $93 million Medicare fraud case

Khadeer Khan Mohammed, a 46 year old Indian-origin man, has been declared a fugitive by the United States government for his alleged role in a Medicare fraud scheme totaling approximately $93 million. Mohammed owned American Premier Labs LLC, based in Richardson, Texas. According to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the operation ran from August 2023 to October 2024. Investigators state that Mohammed used the personal identifying information of practicing physicians without their consent to submit claims for genetic tests. These tests were not ordered by the physicians and were not used in the care of the beneficiaries.

Of the $93 million in fraudulent claims, at least $65 million was paid out by Medicare. The scale of the operation was highlighted by a 10 day period in 2023 when Medicare paid approximately $13 million in suspected fraudulent claims. US authorities, including the FBI and the HHS, are pursuing a criminal case and have seized nearly $6 million from bank accounts linked to Mohammed. HHS believes the suspect is currently located in Hyderabad, India. It remains unclear if Indian authorities have been formally approached regarding his location.
