Institutional Crisis Erupts in Brazil Over STF and Federal Police Conflict

A severe institutional crisis has emerged within Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) following a decision by Justice André Mendonça to remove the Director General of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues, and the director of intelligence, Leandro Almada da Costa. Justice Mendonça justified the removals by claiming the Federal Police conducted illegal and systematic monitoring of him and produced clandestine intelligence reports to distort ongoing investigations. In response, Attorney General Jorge Messias appealed the decision to Justice Edson Fachin, arguing that the removal violates the President's exclusive authority to appoint the director of the police force. Justice Fachin has granted Mendonça 72 hours to respond to the appeal.

However, this suggestion has caused internal friction within the Workers Party (PT), where some leaders view the move as a mistake that would bring the crisis directly into the presidential palace.
