Internal Pressure Mounts Against Chancellor Friedrich Merz Following Electoral Defeat

Chancellor Friedrich Merz is facing growing internal criticism and instability within the Union following a significant electoral defeat in Sachsen Anhalt. In that state election on September 6, the AfD secured nearly 44 percent of the vote, while the CDU dropped by almost 20 percentage points to 17.2 percent. Clara von Nathusius, the federal treasurer of the Junge Union, stated that no more elections can be won with the current Chancellor and suggested that he should not run again. Von Nathusius also argued that the party's firewall against the AfD is a failed project and suggested the CDU should be open to exploratory talks with the AfD if invited.

While some figures have expressed support, the stability of Merz's leadership remains under scrutiny. Markus Söder, chairman of the CSU, stated that the Union should stand together and not be divided by the AfD, though he noted he is not responsible for the CDU. Reports indicate that dissatisfaction is spreading through internal chat groups, where demands for a replacement and various scenarios are being discussed. This unrest coincides with the departure of deputy general secretary Christina Stumpp, who will step down on September 21, and public criticism from MP Christian von Stetten regarding the SPD's influence on reforms. The Union now looks toward the upcoming state election in Mecklenburg Vorpommern, which some fear could lead to further disappointment.
