International Leaders and Royalty Gather in Oslo for State Funeral of King Harald V

Oslo is hosting the state funeral of King Harald V of Norway, who died on August 28 at the age of 89. The event has drawn a significant gathering of global heads of state, diplomatic delegations, and members of European royal houses. King Haakon VIII, who automatically succeeded his father, and Queen Mette-Marit are expected to make their first appearance on the Royal Palace balcony as king and queen. In preparation for the ceremonies, Oslo police have implemented extensive security measures, including blocking off the city center and establishing ten controlled access points with security screenings.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska arrived in Norway for the funeral. Ahead of the services, President Zelensky met with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store to discuss Ukraine's air defense needs and the Freyja anti-ballistic missile program, a Ukrainian led European initiative to create a lower cost alternative to the U.S. Patriot system. Ukraine aims to have a working prototype of the Freyja system by the first half of 2027.

Among the royal attendees are King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, and Queen Sofia of Spain, as well as Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko of Japan. The absence of Princess Leonor of Spain has drawn specific attention. While center right framing suggests her absence is a result of a prudent strategy to prioritize her university studies and gradual institutional training, it also notes a contrast with other European monarchies that encourage earlier public exposure for heirs. From a protocol perspective, the Spanish representation is considered complete with the presence of the head of state.
