Mohammad Eslami, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, is not expected to attend the annual IAEA General Conference in Vienna. An official briefed on the matter stated that UN sanctions currently prevent Eslami from international travel. Austria reportedly sought a waiver for the travel ban from the UN sanctions committee, but the request was not granted.
These sanctions were reimposed last year via a snapback mechanism triggered by France, Britain, and Germany, who claimed Iran departed from the 2015 nuclear deal. The reinstated measures include asset freezes, a conventional arms embargo, and restrictions on ballistic missile development. While an official indicated Eslami would not attend, Iran's state news agency IRNA reported that he left Tehran for Vienna to participate in the conference and meet with representatives.
The event occurs amid heightened tensions. Following a 12 day war in June 2025 involving strikes by Israel and the US on Iranian nuclear sites, the IAEA has been unable to verify the status of near weapons grade uranium. The agency reports Iran holds 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent purity. Iran maintains that its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and is not pursuing weapons.
The IAEA General Conference runs from Monday to Friday. Member states will discuss policy issues, including nuclear safeguards in the Middle East, and approve the agency's budget.
