Iran Threatens U.S. Energy Facilities Following Recent Military Strikes

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf warned on Monday that Iran will retaliate against United States attacks by targeting oil and gas facilities in the Middle East. Qalibaf stated that the regional energy production chain is sprawling, accessible, and exposed, adding that U.S. energy companies operating in those waters share that vulnerability. This statement follows a weekend of strikes involving U.S. and Iranian forces, including U.S. attacks on three Iranian oil tankers, one of which was located near the key export hub of Kharg Island.

The threats come amid a broader conflict that began on February 28 with U.S. and Israeli offensives. Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei announced that Iran will soon establish a new restricted zone in the Gulf and approve maps for a new shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz. Rezaei stated that Iran will only commit to keeping the strait open once the United States stops its sabotage and attacks. Shipping data shows that traffic through the strait has dropped to an average of 10 commodity ships per day over the last 10 days, which is the lowest level since May.

Economic impacts have been noted as Brent crude futures reached a six week high on Monday, hitting 97.93 dollars per barrel. While the U.S. has sought to end Iran's nuclear program and halt its regional attacks through Operation Epic Fury, Iranian leadership continues to demand the lifting of sanctions. The current escalation follows the collapse of an interim ceasefire reached in June and a stalemate in Pakistan mediated dialogues.
