An Iranian commercial vessel was struck early Sunday morning near Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in one death and several injuries. Iranian state media reported that the attack occurred around 5:00 local time. While some reports state three people were wounded, others indicate four were injured. The governor of Qeshm, Amir Teymouri, attributed the attack to a terrorist enemy.
Separately, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations monitor reported that another vessel was hit by a projectile while transiting the strait. That report noted a fire broke out and local authorities assisted in evacuating the crew, though it remained unclear if this was the same incident as the one reported by Iran.
The attack occurred one day before Iranian officials were scheduled to meet with regional leaders in Oman to discuss the management of shipping traffic through the waterway. President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that the waterway would open on the condition that the United States terminates its blockade. The U.S. military has not commented on the reported attack, although some reports note that U.S. forces have previously struck Iranian flagged vessels.
Regional tensions have increased as Iran backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have expanded their control, including the capture of Perim Island at the mouth of the Red Sea. This development gives Tehran de facto control over the Bab al Mandeb Strait in addition to its influence over the Strait of Hormuz.
