Israel Claims Control of Strategic Ali Taher Ridge in Southern Lebanon

The Israeli military announced on Friday that it has consolidated control over the Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, a strategic position previously held by the pro-Iranian group Hezbollah. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the operation marked the conclusion of the consolidation phase for the security zone in the region. According to the Israeli military, the ridge contained an extensive underground network including command centers, weapons depots, and living quarters that were developed over two decades with Iranian funding. The military reported that some Hezbollah fighters were eliminated while others fled. A Lebanese military officer noted that Israeli troops seized southern entrances to the complex and are monitoring northern entrances via drones, though it remains unclear how far the troops have penetrated the tunnels.

Reuters reported that Iran had warned the United States last month that it would respond forcefully if Israel attacked these specific positions. Hezbollah did not immediately comment on the loss of the ridge, and independent verification of the site's status was not available. In a separate development, Israel released five Lebanese detainees through the International Committee of the Red Cross as part of U.S. brokered confidence building measures. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun indicated these individuals were part of a first group, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Lebanon would return the remains of Jewish figures killed in the 1980s.
