Israel Opens First Embassy in Slovenia Amid Diplomatic Shift

Israel opened its first resident embassy in Ljubljana on Wednesday, marking a significant warming of relations between the two nations. The move coincides with a visit from Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, the first visit by an Israeli foreign minister to Slovenia in 16 years. During the trip, Saar met with Slovenian Foreign Minister Tone Kajzer to sign a memorandum on cultural cooperation and lead a delegation of businessmen to strengthen economic ties.

This diplomatic shift follows the formation of a center right government led by Prime Minister Janez Jansa. Under the previous liberal government of Robert Golob, Slovenia had been highly critical of Israel, becoming one of the few European countries to formally recognize a Palestinian state in June 2024. The previous administration also banned imports from the West Bank and restricted entry for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and two of his ministers, though these decisions were revoked by the Jansa government.

The opening of the embassy has not been universally welcomed in Slovenia. Student movements, pro Palestinian groups, and a left wing opposition party scheduled protests against the event. The Israeli Foreign Ministry stated that Prime Minister Jansa has demonstrated friendship toward Israel through both words and actions, including support within the European Union.

Reporting on the event varied by political lean. Center outlets framed the event as a strategic move for Israel to counter growing diplomatic isolation in Europe. A center right outlet framed the event as a positive revitalization of a historical relationship and a necessary step toward a common future.
