Israel Plans to Transfer West Bank Law Enforcement to Police Amid Settler Violence

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has ordered the military to develop plans to transfer civilian law enforcement authority for Israelis in the occupied West Bank to the Israel Police. This decision follows a siege of Palestinian families in the village of Qusra that has lasted six days. The move is intended to allow the Israel Defense Forces to focus on security threats and Palestinian terrorism rather than civilian enforcement. According to a statement from the defense minister, the shift is also necessitated by an expected increase in the number of settlers following decisions to establish 104 new communities.

US Ambassador Mike Huckabee described the individuals besieging a home owned by a US citizen as terrorists. Similarly, Israeli Ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter condemned the violence as a distortion of the commandment to settle the land, arguing that inheriting the land requires the pursuit of justice.
