The Israeli military currently occupies between 5% and 6% of Lebanese territory in the south. UNIFIL, the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon, reports that Israel has established four new bases in these areas, bringing the total to nine. These forces have engaged in the construction of protective infrastructure and engineering works to fortify their positions. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz stated he has instructed the military to prepare for a long term presence in the area to establish a security zone intended to protect northern Israel from Hezbollah rockets and drones.
