Israeli Military Operations in Southern Lebanon Cause Severe Civilian and Agricultural Damage

Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon have resulted in significant casualties and the widespread destruction of infrastructure and agriculture. According to the Lebanese health ministry, over 4,300 people have been killed and 12,400 wounded since March. Recent attacks alone have killed 29 people and injured nearly 70, including women, children, and ambulance personnel. The Norwegian Refugee Council reports that hundreds of thousands of people remain displaced, with many unable to return because their villages have been reduced to rubble.

Lebanese Agriculture Minister Hani Nizar reports that nearly 25 percent of the country's agricultural land is affected, with damages in the south estimated at 530 million dollars. The minister states that Israeli forces have used Glyphosate, a herbicide classified by the WHO as probably carcinogenic, at concentrations 30 to 50 times higher than usual to remove vegetation used as cover by Hezbollah. Additionally, Human Rights Watch and other international media have documented the use of white phosphorus in inhabited areas, which the organization says violates international humanitarian law due to the severe burns it causes.

Israel maintains that its attacks target the Hezbollah militia and states that reports of civilian casualties are being investigated. An Israeli army spokesperson affirmed the commitment to the ceasefire agreement while continuing operations to remove threats. Both center right sources highlight the severity of the destruction, though they focus on different impacts. One emphasizes the long term ecological and economic ruin of the land, while the other focuses on the immediate humanitarian crisis and the displacement of civilians.
