These groups claim that Ben Gvir's actions are part of a systematic policy of retaliation involving deprivation and torture. Since taking office in 2022, Ben Gvir has pushed for tougher measures, including restricting family visits and reducing food and water supplies.

In contrast, a center-leaning outlet frames the event as the minister mocking the complaints of prisoners while justifying the measures through the lens of national security and the plight of Israeli hostages.
