The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite early Friday morning using a GSLV-Mk II rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The satellite, which weighs 2,367 kg, is the heaviest payload ever carried by a GSLV rocket. It was injected into a sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit approximately 18 minutes after liftoff. From there, the satellite will perform orbit-raising manoeuvres to reach its final destination in geosynchronous orbit, roughly 36,000 km above Earth.
Once operational, EOS-05 will be India's first dedicated imaging satellite in geosynchronous orbit. Because its orbital period will synchronize with the Earth's rotation, it can remain stationary relative to the planet to provide continuous, real-time imaging of India and neighboring regions. ISRO officials stated the satellite will support agriculture, forestry, water body monitoring, and disaster management, specifically for tracking cyclones, cloudbursts, and thunderstorms. ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan confirmed that all satellite systems are functioning normally and the solar panels have been deployed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO, calling the launch a proud moment for the nation and a reflection of the growing capabilities of the Indian space sector. The mission is viewed as a significant recovery for ISRO, which had faced a difficult period. Reports indicate that three of six missions in 2025 and 2026 were unsuccessful, including the PSLV-C62 mission in January 2026 and the PSLV-C61 in May 2025. This success also follows a previous GSLV failure in August 2021 during the EOS-03 mission.
