Jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu Joins New Opposition Party

Ekrem Imamoglu, the jailed Mayor of Istanbul and a primary political rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, announced on Wednesday that he is joining the newly formed New Party. Imamoglu stated on social media that he is resigning from his 17 year membership in the Republican People's Party (CHP) to build a more democratic and hopeful future for Turkey. The New Party was founded last month by opposition leader Ozgur Ozel and 90 other lawmakers after a court removed Ozel as the chairman of the CHP. The New Party is already the second largest force in parliament and is expected to attract many CHP voters.

Imamoglu has been in detention for over a year on corruption charges that he denies. He was elected as the CHP presidential candidate in March 2025, shortly after his arrest. Additionally, Istanbul University annulled his university diploma, a requirement for presidential candidacy, one day before his detention. The next elections are scheduled for 2028, though they could occur sooner.

Opposition members and human rights groups describe the jailing of hundreds of CHP officials since 2024 as politically motivated. The government rejects these claims and asserts that the judiciary is independent. While the New Party poses a challenge to Erdogan, some analysts suggest that the splintering of the opposition could potentially help the president extend his 23 year rule. Center left framing emphasizes the ongoing repression and the party's role in continuing the CHP's political course, while center framing highlights the legal crackdown and the strategic implications for the presidential race.
