External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated on Thursday that whether India buys Russian oil or not will not solve the ongoing crisis between Russia and Ukraine. Speaking in Kyiv following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Jaishankar argued that the conflict will be resolved through dialogue, diplomacy, and negotiation rather than through the purchase of oil, minerals, metals, or fertilizer.
Jaishankar emphasized that India must address the energy needs of its 1.4 billion people during a difficult global energy situation. He noted that while India respects the perspective of Ukraine, he expects other countries to respect India's position as well. During his visit, Jaishankar also expressed that India stands ready to help end the war and could mediate if needed.
President Zelensky thanked India for its desire to end the war, which he described as an unjust war started by Russia. Additionally, Jaishankar met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha to discuss attacks on commercial shipping in the Black Sea.
