Jake Reiner has given his first television interview since the December killing of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. The couple were found dead from stab wounds in their Los Angeles home. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been indicted on two counts of first degree murder and has pleaded not guilty. He faces a potential sentence of life in prison or the death penalty. A pretrial hearing for Nick Reiner is scheduled for September 15.
During his appearance on Good Morning America and an interview with KABC, Jake Reiner described the past eight months as a living nightmare. He recalled the moment his sister, Romy Reiner, informed him of their father's death and her inability to locate their mother. He stated that he feels a sense of rage and unfairness regarding the tragedy. He also noted that his parents had provided unconditional love and support to their children, including Nick, who had struggled with addiction and mental health issues.
Jake Reiner mentioned that he has not spoken with his brother and declined to say if he would do so in the future. Meanwhile, Nick Reiner has attempted to access 1.6 million dollars from a trust established by his parents to pay for legal fees. Trustees have blocked this request, citing California's slayer statute which prevents individuals from benefiting financially from the estate of a person they are accused of killing.
To honor his parents' legacy, the Children's Institute of Los Angeles created the Michele and Rob Reiner Champion for Change award. Jamie Lee Curtis is set to receive the inaugural award on November 8.
